On October 2, 1973, a press conference was held in Chicago to announce the formation of the the World Football League (WFL). It kicked off in July of 1974 as a rival to the established National Football League (NFL). At first, it seemed like it would be a serious rival to the established league. After all, league founder Gary Davidson had already formed the (ABA) to rival the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the (WHA) to challenge the National Hockey League (NHL). While both of those leagues struggled, they played for several seasons. The WFL, though, folded in 1975 after a season and a half.
